Sam's powers did not come into his powers until after a prophecy from ancient times was fulfilled. When they did it was with the powers of an ancient ancestor, the mother of the witch who began the prophecy from so long ago. He could read the minds of those around him. He was not given the chance to truly learn this ability as he gave his life to protect some of his decendants in a battle against those who cost both of his parents their lives and his older brother his eyesight.
